This novel includes explicit scenes describing precisely the behaviors of rape, which Junto tries and which another man tries whom Lutie kills in the final act. But, Lutie adjusts very realistically and quickly at that she has not been spoiled by privilege. As a black family, there were obvious disadvantages that still pertained to them, but still, we know from Lutie's fashion, her behavior, and her attitudes what her life was like in the middle class. Callie Dalton narrates this section in it’s entirety. After Aaron returns to the States, the book moves to the traditional Mariana Zapata style – first person from Ruby’s perspective. The protagonists don’t meet in person until well into the book. Callie Dalton narrates the emails and IMs from Ruby and Teddy Hamilton narrates the emails and IMs from Aaron.Ģ. Over time and once they become friends, the pair move to IMing each other. The first part of the book consists entirely of email. Aaron is a Staff Sergeant deployed in Iraq and Ruby Santos from Houston writes to him as part of a pen pal program for soldiers serving overseas. The first three are graphic novels: The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen From the Future, released on AugSuper Diaper Baby 2: Invasion of the Potty Snatchers, released on Jand Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Re-turn of Tippy Tinkletrousers, released on August 28, 2012. Pilkey took a break from writing for a few years to care for his terminally ill father (who died November 13, 2008), but in 2010 agreed with Scholastic to publish four new books. Even though it is spelled Dav, it is pronounced "Dave" (rhyming with "cave" and "brave"). The atypical spelling of his first name came from a period of employment in a Pizza Hut, when the "e" was omitted from his nametag. The book's publication in 1987 was included in the award.
